He just knew there was something magical about faces.

That part never left.

I’m still fascinated by the moment the camera becomes background and the person becomes unmistakable.

Hi, I’m Vivek. It rhymes with cake. I’m a studio portrait photographer in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

I was born in Canada to Indian parents and given a Sanskrit name rooted in wisdom and discernment. It has also led to a lifetime of people pausing before they say it, taking a breath, and hoping for the best.

In 2012, a surprise green card brought me from Toronto to Minneapolis.

Toronto had prepared me for winter.

Minneapolis found that adorable.

Being near my brother and building my life and studio here made Minneapolis home.

Before portraits, I photographed just about everything: events, landscapes, homes, commercial spaces, even jewelry.

Jewelry, for the record, takes direction beautifully, although its range of facial expressions is limited.

But people were the subjects I kept thinking about long after the camera was packed away.

A portrait begins before anyone picks up a camera.

It begins with attention.

Listening for what gives someone energy. Noticing the expressions that appear before anyone asks for one. Learning which details belong to them and which belong to somebody else’s idea of a portrait.

The better I know the person, the less the camera has to announce itself.

That way of seeing was shaped by the work I did before portraiture. I was an illustrator, videographer, and real estate photographer, then spent a decade as a copywriter creating stories for nonprofits, technology companies, and national brands.

Illustration taught me to study shape, light, and detail. Videography taught me not to rush what was unfolding. Copywriting taught me that one precise detail can carry the whole story.

Portraiture brought all of it into the same room.

These days, my team and I create Vanity Fair-inspired legacy portraits, headshots, and personal branding imagery from our studio in the Arts District of Northeast Minneapolis.

Most people know what they want their photographs to say.

They just do not speak camera.

That is the part I translate.

We begin with how you carry yourself, what matters to you, and the details that are already yours. Each member of our team brings a different eye and skill to the experience, and together we shape the final portrait.
